The new fitness facility at the Canadore College main campus is officially open.

Vice president Shawn Chorney says this is a $1 million dollar project with the Canadore students council contributing over half.

He says the facility includes free weights, weight benches, rope pulls to strengthen muscles, treadmills and bikes.

“It is the most modern suite of equipment. So that if you’re on a simple program just trying to stay fit or healthy. Or there’s space for extreme training and even for yoga and stretching.”
He says 7 jobs are being created with 6 students being hired to help run the facility.

“We announced a part time life health coach which is something we’re gonna try. And if student demand warrants it we going to have a professional here who can help them bring their mental health, emotional, physical and wellness plans together through the facility.”
Council president Robin Chomkomolin says the facility will benefit students in a couple of ways.

“It creates a community after class. You’re able to make new friends and communicate with people and you’re not only talking about how you’re stressed in class.”
