The Powassan Voodoos stayed close to home for their second major signing of the off-season.

The Voodoos have signed North Bay Trappers AAA defenceman Jacob Peterson-Galema, the club announced on Monday.

The 6’2”, 185-pound defenceman finished second overall in Great North Midget League scoring with  12 goals and 41 assists for 53 points in 36 regular season games with the North Bay Major Midget AAA Trappers.

“I hope I can bring some offence from the D, I have always been good offensively and hopefully I can do that with the Voodoos,” said Peterson-Galema.

Max Gavin, the Voodoos new head coach, saw Peterson-Galema display his skills at the Voodoos April Prospects camp.

“The thing with Jacob on the back end is you cannot teach size,” said Gavin about the North Bay product.

“He has a good stick obviously he is very offensive and if he can continue to work on the right time to jump into the rush and learn how to play the junior game, put on a little bit of size, I think he is going to be a scary junior A player.”

Peterson-Galema was a first-round pick of the North Bay Battalion in the U18 OHL Priority Selection this spring.

The big local defenceman will join the Voodoos if he does not make the North Bay Battalion regular season roster after the OHL main camp this September
