Last week was big for Canadore College as an international business has announced its setting up its Canadian operations here and using the college facilities for research.

The president and CEO of Apothio Dr. Trent Jones says they’ve made this decision for a couple of reasons.

“The people that are there. The Genome lab is already in place and the regulatory model in Canada is the best. Everything is at Canadore and it’s the best place to be,” he says.

It was just last August that Canadore officially opened its new Genome lab which has been commissioned to conduct the company’s research and development projects which will include developing proprietary hemp and cannabis strains to treat a broad spectrum of medical issues including seizures, autism, insomnia and chronic pain.

As well, they’ll be relying on the Innovation Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping or ICAMP facility at Commerce Court for support.

Canadore’s Director of Innovation and the Village Services Frank Suraci says Canadore has made a big investment in technology.

“It made perfect sense. North Bay is in a ideal situation to creating a health and pharmaceutical sector. This will be something that will bring technology, innovation and products to the forefront,” he says.

Apothio is looking at leasing land until they have their own permanent location and all that should happen within six months. Suraci says there will be opportunities for local business support.
