It’s being described as a key cornerstone to further restore public confidence in the Near North District School Board.
This as the board gets ready to adopt a new governance manual and by-laws at their June 22nd meeting.
Officials say since this board was elected, a complete review of board governance policies, procedures and by-laws was a priority and was further assisted by recommendations of both the Ontario Ombudsman and the Ministry of Education Special Advisors.
In fact, the special advisor assigned to work with the board was hired by the board to lead this process.
“Since taking office, our Board of Trustees have been clear and persistent about their commitment to transparent, accountable and ethical governance,” says Board Chair Jay Aspin. “The completion of our governance manual and by-laws is a significant priority for our Board of Trustees and our Senior Administration. These documents are essential to provide both management and Trustees with the framework necessary to provide professional and effective delivery of education services. This accomplishment will provide another key cornerstone to further restore the public’s confidence in our organization.”
Back in February, the final report on improving public confidence at the Near North District School Board was released by the Minister of Education.
Key issues included the lack of effective leadership, which in turn resulted in a lack of clarity, lack of consistency and a resulting lack of public (and staff) confidence.
The report also said the board is making improvements to its operations by focusing on inspiring leadership, multi-year strategic planning, evidence-based decision-making and monitoring measurable goals.
