The city has begun the process that could turn municipal property near Four Mile Lake into a beach that would honour the military.

At the last council meeting, a motion was approved to name the beach, Four Mile Lake Veteran’s
Memorial Beach.

Councillor Mark King says work will have to be done on the property to make this happen.

“The proposal is to provide a driveway and a parking area close to the lake. That’s the only proposal we’ve talked about at this particular point,” he says.

The idea comes from World War Two Veteran Bill Parfitt.

“I had my friends die in the war that used to swim there and I saw the lakeshore disappearing. Otter Lake is a beautiful lake and we can make a great beach there,” he says.

King says there is a nearby community centre that isn’t being used and one idea is to sell it and turn it into change rooms.

King says Parfitt’s son in an Engineering professor and he’s proposing his students come up with a plan that would need city approval to get the work done.
