The Near North District School Board says work is well underway on the next school year following the decision earlier this year to close Widdifield Secondary School at the end of the current school year.

Board chair Jay Aspin says at a meeting this week, details of a new Near North Sports Program at West Ferris Secondary School were unveiled.

“It’s really catered to students with a keen interest in pursuing or participating in sports, health, recreation and outdoor adventure,” Aspin says.

He says through the consolidation process they’re trying to make the two remaining schools as efficient and equitable as possible.

“We want to make sure the schools cater to the needs of students in their educational future and we want to make sure we have two strong and viable high schools,” he says.

He says programming options at West Ferris Secondary School and Chippewa Secondary School for next fall were discussed by trustees as well.
