Winter maintenance standards in north were once again brought up by the opposition NDP at Queen’s Park this week.
Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha says the province finally disclosed performance records for Ontario’s private maintenance highway contractors last week.
“It shows that last year the government issued over $291,000 in penalties against highway maintenance contractors who violated their agreements,” he told the Legislature.
The opposition continues to call on the province to ensure highways 17 and 11 are plowed just as quickly as 400 series highways in the south.
Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney says they take the issue seriously.
She also says private contractors are doing a good job and are beating standards of the top class highways in the province.
“We are doing everything that we can to find ways to enhance our service levels in the north and across the province, and we will continue to do so,” she said.
