We’re only a day away from the start of the 2019 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo in Verner.

The event goes tomorrow (Tuesday, September 17th) and runs through Saturday, September 21st.

Ontario Plowmen’s Association spokesperson Richard Vivian says they expect upwards of 80,000 people over the five days.

He says it’s a key event for everyone in agriculture, but that’s not all.

“Also for people who want something fun to do for the day, it’s a great low cost, family event. But also for those who maybe don’t have a full understanding of how agriculture affects their lives,” Vivian says.

He says people will learn more about where their food comes from.

“Agriculture has been as far back as the country goes and it’s not only key to an employment and economic standpoint, we all have to eat,” he says.

Vivian says the economic impact from the event is typically over $20 million.

On top of the plowing matches, there’s a tented city of vendors, exhibitors, entertainment and much more.

This is only the second time the event, which started in 1913, has been held in the north.

Earlton was the host community in 2009.
