The provincial ringette championship is in North Bay this week.

Action starts tomorrow at several arenas including the West Ferris Arena, The Pete Palangio Arena and the Astorville arena.

President of the West Ferris Ringette Association Kelli Van Buskirk says 4 provincial divisions will be decided on Sunday with plenty of local athletes taking part.

“Our under 14 team is competing in the Jacks division. Our under 16 team is in the McCarthy division and our under 19 team is also in the Jacks division,” she says.

63 teams are here taking part in the competition with the opening ceremonies Thursday night at the R.J. Surtees Athletic Centre at Nipissing University.

She says the U19 team has come 2nd in past years and she hopes home ice will make a big difference this year.

Buskirk says in most years the local teams travel and have to win provincials on the road and that’s not the case this year.

“It’s an opportunity for our girls to play at home. Because in most years we have to travel to play in other tournaments and that’s all different this year,” Buskirk says.

The action starts at 8 am on Thursday morning and wraps up with the last of 4 championship finals at 5 pm on Sunday afternoon.
