Matthew Struthers’ 24th goal of the season was the overtime winner as the North Bay Battalion defeated the Soo Greyhounds 4-3 last night at Memorial Gardens.

It was a power play goal for the Troops, who bounced back after a loss to Sudbury on Wednesday.

Battalion Assistant Coach Adam Dennis says this was a big win.

“Anytime you can take points away from a team like that you know you’ve put a good effort together. I though tonight was no different. It started yesterday when we came ready right at the drop of the puck, and it continued on to tonight,” he says.

Christian Purboo got the start in net and made 35 saves, earning his fifth win of the year.

Dennis says it was an impressive performance from their back up goaltender.

“I‘m trying to think if there’s many goalies who have beaten the Soo Greyhounds twice this year, and he has. You need your goalie to be good when you’re going to beat those guys and he was. Really happy for him. Our guys want to win games for him,” he says.

Brandon Coe tied the game in the third, while Harrison Caines and Mitchell Russell scored goals in the first.

North Bay is back in action Sunday, at home to Mississauga.

Leafs fans will have the chance to get up close and personal with a dozen former Toronto Maple Leafs at Sunday’s Battalion game at Memorial Gardens.

The list includes Rick Vaive, Craig Muni, Nik Antropov, Mike Kostka, Dan Daoust, Ric Nattress, Tom Fergus, J.S. Aubin, Christian Hanson, Wayne Primeau, who’s son Mason plays for your hometown Battalion, Darryl Shannon, Shayne Corson and Steve Thomas.

Collectively they have appeared in over 9,000 NHL games.

They’ll be signing autographs, sitting in the stands and taking part in in-game promotions.
