A warning about ice conditions on the upper Sturgeon River.

Police are urging people to stay off the river ice between Crystal Falls and Sturgeon Falls.

Water flows are being impacted by mechanical issues at West Nipissing Power Generation.

Ontario Power Generation says it has reduced the flow of water at two of its control dams upstream of OPG’s Crystal Falls Generating Station on the Sturgeon River.

It says the reduction in flow will assist another dam operator on the river system that is currently experiencing mechanical difficulties at the West Nipissing Power Dam.

It says this action will increase water levels upstream of OPG’s Crystal Falls Generating Station, as well as in the areas of Tomiko Lake and Red Cedar Lake.

It says higher water levels may cause unsafe ice or create open water.

OPG is asking the public to use extreme caution on ice and around waterways above Crystal Falls and in the above-mentioned areas.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has issued a flood warning for the area.

(ice shacks)

North Bay OPP say they’ve responded to several ice shack break and enters since January 1st in the Callander Bay area of Lake Nipissing.

Police say don’t leave any valuables in your ice shack and encourage the ice fishing community to get to know their neighbours.

People are also encouraged to report any suspicious activity to police.
