Nipissing MPP and Finance Minister Vic Fedeli is detailing the province’s cannabis legislation at a meeting today at city hall.

Invited to the meeting are all council candidates, first nations officials and the police chief.

Fedeli says the government will need to know early next year if a community wants to opt in or opt out of being host site for a cannabis retail store.

“This needs to be their absolute first order of business once they’re elected in October. At their December or at the very latest their first meeting in January they need to decide whether they’re opting in or out. It’s a one time offer,” He says.

Fedeli says this isn’t about revenue for the government.

“It’s not about money for the province. This is about the safety of our kids, the safety of our roads and thwarting the illegal cannabis. And that’s why we are opening these private retail stores,” he says.
