Finance Minister Vic Fedeli will be educating city council at a meeting on Thursday on the impending cannabis legislation.

That from Councillor Mac Bain who says the most important meeting he attended at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference was the session on cannabis legislation.

“There’ll be a lot of details flowing to municipalities in the very short future and we need to be nimble and make a decision on whether to opt in or opt out,” Bain says.

Bain says a decision could be made before the municipal election or in the new year on whether North Bay wants to a host location for a store selling pot.

Meantime, AMO signed a joint memorandum of understanding with the government.

The memorandum of understanding sets out the principles and procedures of how the Province consults with AMO on provincial legislation or regulations that have a significant impact on municipalities.

Bain who represents the city at AMO and at the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities says this year’s conference was a great opportunity to get the new government ministers up to speed on key issues in Northern OntarIo communities.

“And us to get to know them and offer our cooperation on wanting to move forward on issues of importance to citizens in the communities of Northern Ontario,” he says.
