A charity bike ride goes today (Sunday) along the countryside of the western arm of Lake Nipissing, following a section of the Voyageur Cycling Route.

The route is being deemed a major cycling tourism experience.

When completed, the Voyageur Cycling Route will span over 630 km from Sudbury to Ottawa, following the path of the voyageurs along four heritage waterways.

The first section to be considered officially ‘ready to ride’ runs from Sturgeon Falls to Hagar.

There are wayfinding signs, route maps and bike repair stands in Sturgeon Falls, Lavigne, Noelville and St Charles.

Officials say the rugged and natural beauty of northern Ontario sets the Voyageur Cycling Route apart from routes in more urbanized parts of the province.

Upwards of 150 riders are expected for the West Nipissing Cycle for Charity, the inaugural ride along sections of the new route.
