A rezoning proposal that could result in a new subdivision on Janey Avenue has received city council approval, but not everyone is happy about it.

Several area residents say 71 new lots will create safety issues throughout the neighborhood as putting in an intersection would be part of the project.

Tara Blake says there are already concerns now, and having more traffic will make things worse.

“And if you think of multiple daily trips in and out. My best guess is about 700 in and outs out of an unsafe junction,” Blake says.

She says they are considering appealing council’s decision to the Ontario Municipal Board and they’ll have 20 days to do that once the city appeal process is complete.

Community Services committee chair Mark King says there have been some adjustments to the proposal by the developer, but no agreement was reached with the neighborhood.

Those adjustments include changes to the travel portion of the Avenue and there will be some trees put in as part of the agreement, as the city will create a buffer between one home and the roadway.

King says there is an appeal period in place following council’s decision.

The city has 15 days to do that. Following that there’s a 20 day period for appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board and I fully expect it to go that route,” he says.
