A splash pad is getting closer to a reality in North Bay.

Last night, city council signed off on the project after hearing the North Bay and Nipissing Rotary Clubs and Rotaract are prepared to make a $250,000 commitment.

President of the North Bay club Chuck Verge says over $160,000 has already been set aside for the project.

“$250,000 is our part of it and we’re going to raise the other roughly $400,000. We don’t see any problem with raising it we know we will. It’s so much easier with the municipality on side,” he says.

Verge points out they will need provincial and federal funding support to make it happen.

It hasn’t been decided where the pad will be located, but Verge says the location should be near the Discovery North Bay Museum.

“You don’t want to move it too far because you’re going to have to build more washrooms and the city knows that. They recognize that. It’s in the initial consultants plan put it where we want it beside the museum,” he says.

Councillor Derek Shogren says its great to have service clubs in the city that care so much.

Councillor Mark King says the Downtown Waterfront Advisory Committee is split on location, but he hopes to have a recommendation next month.
