North Bay Police are looking at possibly forming a specific unit to investigate cases of sexual violence and domestic assault.

He says no decision has been made.

Chief Shawn Devine has been working with organizations like the Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre, Community Counselling Centre of Nipissing, Nipissing Transition House and the Ojibway Women’s Resource Centre to get a sense of what victims go through when talking to police about a crime.

“In investigations we often look at just the facts. But it is not just the facts it’s about presenting an opportunity for a victim to tell their story and that’s what we have to look at,” he says.

Devine says they’ve undergone training with the Ottawa Rape Centre and have looked at 1 case so far.

Also on the committee is Nipissing University.
