Local Changemakers, including women, men, survivors and others who support the breast cancer cause are taking part in Sunday’s CIBC Run for the Cure at the waterfront.

Survivor Speaker Tara Blake is a fitness instructor, nutritionist and mom of five.

She completed treatment about six months ago.

During the darkest days she would write a list of the five highlights of the day.

“My kids, how much they enjoy their activities, seeing their little smiles on their faces, and the kindness and generosity of the community often brought me to tears,” she says.

She says she learned that people are always stronger than what they believe they are, but that’s not all.

“With each day we have a choice of how we want to live that day, what kind of attitude we want to bring forth and just to live fully,” she says.

Sunday’s 5k or 1k walk/run is a fundraiser for breast cancer research, support services, health education and advocacy programs.

The Victorian Order of Nurses are marking their 120th anniversary this year and Discovery North Bay Museum is opening a new exhibit this afternoon (Friday) at 3 pm, outlining the role the VON played in North Bay.

The historical exhibit includes uniforms, tools, scrapbooks, and photos.

There’s also a game called “Spinach”, produced by the VON to help nurses teach their patients about nutrition and healthy living.

The exhibit will be open until November 17th.
