Callander and Nipissing Township are looking to create a joint fire department to serve both municipalities.

A couple of public information meetings are being held, starting  Wednesday in Callander.

Mayor Hec Lavigne says the move will result in cost savings for his community of Callander and neighbouring Nipissing, but that’s not all.

“We’ve looked long-term at equipment purchases, training, we will have a fire prevention officer that will service both areas, as well,” he says.

Lavigne also points out the currently share services with Nipissing.

“We share a fire chief presently and we have been for a number of years, we also share in a chief building official,” he adds.

The fire department will remain a volunteer service, but there would be a board.

Wednesday’s meeting goes at 7pm at the Callander Community Centre.

Thursday’s meeting is at 7pm at the Nipissing Community Centre.
