Aspin funding Two federal funding announcements were made by MP Jay Aspin at North Bay’s waterfront on Friday. They concern improving regional recreation trails. He says 98 Thousand Dollars goes to  the North Bay Snowmobilers Club and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs so a bridge can be built on the North River which would connect trails in the North Bay area to trails in the Mattawa area. The rest of the money- around 24  Thousand Dollars goes to the Discovery Routes Trails Organization

The money will be used to complete a feasibility study and implementation plan so a cycling route trail network can go from the Ottawa Valley to Sudbury.

Aspin says these are both tourism based initiatives.

He says recreation is becoming a huge part of tourism.

Brian Baker is the president of the North Bay Snowmobilers Club is very pleased.

He says they already have a design for the bridge .

He says once the bridge is done they’ll be able to promote this as another benefit in using the trails in this part of the north.

Mattawa spokesperson Jacques Begin says the feasibility study is a good start.

He says right now there’s a trail network for cyclists from Sudbury to the Sault and he hopes this announcement will lead to one from Deep River to North Bay.
