vehicle collisionOver the last decade 10% of all road deaths on OPP patrolled roads have happened in the northeast region.

Ontario Provincial Police have released ten year data revealing 3500 road deaths, and 379 of those in our area.

Regional Sargent Carolle Dionne adds 288 young adult male drivers died in those collisions.

She says the majority of the collisions are preventable because they are driver errors. She says whether it’s distracted driving, speeding, or impaired – these all result in tragedies and can be avoided.

Dionne says they also have a high number of innocent victims with 59 drivers losing their lives in the region. However, Dionne says people are doing a better job at keeping their children and teenagers safe, and it’s thanks to public education.

In 2014, OPP say there was a ten year low in deaths among children under 16, as well as the 16 to 19 year age group.
