In our local sports recap, we look at a couple of rookie’s who earn top honors in OUA men’s hockey, as well as two former Chippewa Raiders competing in the OUA Track and Field championships.

 

Meantime, tryouts are coming up for local soccer and there’s a big badminton/squash tournament happening this weekend.

 

 

OUA Hockey

 
A couple of rookies on the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team have made the OUA All-Rookie team.

 

Defenseman Jimmy McDowell and Forward Erik Robichaud were given the top honors.

 

McDowell was second on the team with 24 points in 26 games, ranking second on the team in total points.

Robichaud finished his rookie season with 23 points, scoring 11 goals and adding 12 helpers.

OUA track and field

 
North Bay natives Sarah Swain and Alison Fung competed at the OUA indoor track and field championships at York University this past weekend.

 

Swain won a silver medal in both the 60meter hurdles and the women’s pole vault for the Windsor Lancers.

Fung unfortunately suffered an injury in warm ups and wasn’t able to finish, placing her in 8th.

 

However, the former Chippewa Raiders will compete at the CIS nationals which take place next week (March 12th-14th) at the University of Windsor.

Selects soccer

 
The North Bay Selects Soccer Club under 16 boys’ team has tryouts coming up for their summer season.

 

This is for players born in 1999. Tryouts are being held starting in the second week of March.

 

The plan is for the team to play in the North Bay men’s 2nd Division, with minimal traveling required during the season. Contact Coach Frank Nucara for more information.

 

Badminton/Squash

 
Military athletes from bases all across Ontario will be competing in the Canadian Armed Forces Regional Badminton and Squash Championship here in North Bay.

 

The tournament takes place this weekend starting at 9am on Saturday. It will take place at the 22 Wing Fitness and Wellness Centre and the public is invited to come watch the action.

 

NOSSA Hockey

 

At the Boys hockey AAA NOSSA finals in North Bay;
St Basil from the Soo defeated St. Charles from Sudbury 6-0. Meantime, two local teams squared off with Widdifield defeating West Ferris 6-5.

 

The NOSSA finals will be played tonight at Memorial Gardens at 6pm with St. Charles taking on St. Basil. Admission is free
