All public health services offered by the Health Unit will now be delivered from their new location.

The new building at 345 Oak Street West opens to the public today (Monday).

$20 million was budgeted for the new facility, which is close to all bus routes and addresses the inadequate and inefficient work space in the previous building.

“Our new Health Unit was designed with the public in mind – their needs, well-being and health,” says Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health. “The new space will allow us to improve our service delivery to our clients in North Bay, as well as to those in the surrounding communities in our districts.”

The new building offers a family room, and the option of gendered or all-gender washrooms, and barrier-free washrooms.

New facilities such as their teaching kitchen will be used for educational programming for the public and community partners.

New services, such as the adult dental clinic for eligible clients with limited or no access to dental care, will be available.

The Health Unit offers a variety of programs and services including vaccinations, needle exchange, water testing, breastfeeding support, genetics, testing for sexually transmitted infections, birth control, travel clinics, dental services for adults and children, health promotion, inspections, emergency planning and management, parenting classes, food safety training, outbreak management, infectious disease monitoring, quitting smoking support, tobacco enforcement, in-home prenatal support, and much more.

The previous Health Unit building on Commercial Street is now closed.
