A new speech from the throne will be read today (Monday) at Queens Park.

This follows a decision last week by the premier to prorogue the legislature.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says when you prorogue you basically kill every item the legislators have yet to deal with like his private members bill dubbed the Forestry Revitalization Act.

“It was to approve 14 storey wood buildings and I wanted it passed because University of Toronto wants to build a 14 storey building on Bloor and Avenue Road,” Fedeli says.

He says it was scheduled for second reading debate on March 29th and instead will now die on the order paper.

Fedeli says the government is doing this because they want to choke off debate with the election less than three months away.

“We only can debate the Speech From The Throne we have 12 hours of debate. That’s unusual. They cut us off for very important decisions they cut off off after only a few hours of debate and say you’ve had enough we’ve heard from everybody,” Fedeli says.

The Throne Speech comes a week before the government is set to table its 2018 budget, which is expected to include a deficit of about $8 billion the Liberals say is necessary to beef up spending on health care, child care and support for students.

The Liberals have said no sitting days will be lost because prorogation falls over March Break and that all government bills and motions introduced earlier will be reintroduced once the legislature resumes.
