An online petition has been started aimed at letting the kids at MT Davidson school in Callander cartwheel again.

A parent started the petition ahead of a meeting with the principal over the ban on cartwheels.

There were over 60 signatures as of 8:30 this morning (Thursday).

Meantime, a release from the Near North Board encourages parents at all of it’s schools to have proactive conversations about safety and well-being issues, like cartwheels, through their school’s parent councils or principal.

The board says student safety is a top priority for them.

Below is the full text of the release:

“Student health, wellness and safety remains at the core of decision making for schools in the Near North District School Board on all topics ranging from out-of-school trips to school uniforms to permitted school yard activities.
It is our expectation that all schools have conversations about what best suits their schools needs and engage in consultation with students, the School Advisory Council, staff and community partners through a decision making process.
When determining the safety considerations of curricular and other activities, relevant documents such as the Ontario Physical Education Safety guidelines, best practices from schools across the Province and a review of recent legislative events along with a number of other factors can also impact decision-making.
Other schools in the Province, in consultation parents groups, have cautioned students against certain gymnastic moves that may cause injury when done without the presence of proper conditions and adequate supervision.
The Near North District School Board always encourages parents at all of its schools to engage in proactive conversations about issues affecting student safety and well-being, such as cartwheels, through their school’s parent councils or their school’s principal.”
