The inaugural Hydrogen for Sustainable Northern Communities Forum goes tomorrow (Tues) in the city.

Hydrogen industry experts, representatives of multiple industry, service and education sectors, along with municipal and provincial government officials are taking part.

Invest North Bay Chair George Burton says it’s an education forum.

“It’s a chance for people to become more knowledgeable about the use of hydrogen cell technology and I think the more people that attend, the greater the generation of ideas on the application,” he says. “Coming from this we hope to have several concrete steps to follow.”

Burton says there are benefits to using hydrogen, pointing out one of the challenges with economic development is producing clean energy.

“Hydrogen is a zero-carbon process and the byproduct of producing hydrogen is, of course, water. It is an environmentally sound practice and we think it may have several applications for business and industry,” he says.

The event looks to raise awareness about hydrogen energy as a realistic solution to climate change, focus on hydrogen for transportation and industrial applications in the North, provide “live” hydrogen vehicle testing opportunities and more.

The forum is taking place at Canadore’s Aviation Campus.
