Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota says the tariffs announced this week by the U.S. government for softwood lumber imports are unfair.

He says the Trudeau government will fight the 20 % duties vigorously and do everything it can to protect good paying jobs, pointing out Canada has won numerous challenges on softwood lumber against the United States.

Rota says they will fight on this one and litigate, if necessary, but they expect to win.

He also says the government will be offering support to companies and workers impacted.

Those steps include promoting the use of Canadian wood across the country and in other Global markets too.

Rota says forestry plays a major economic role in his riding and directly, or indirectly, employs 172,000 people in the province.
