City police have concluded their investigation into a fatal pedestrian-related collision in May on Algonquin Avenue.

No charges have been filed.

Police say two people, an 80 year old man and 74 year old woman from Temiscaming, Quebec were crossing the road where there is no crosswalk and walked out in front of an SUV.

They later died in hospital.

Police say investigators did not find any evidence to suspect driver error, including speeding, distracted driving, or impaired driving.

North Bay Police investigated the crash with the assistance of a technical traffic reconstruction investigator from the Ontario Provincial Police.

The collision did spark a flurry of calls for a pedestrian crossing on that stretch of roadway, including an online petition.

Police have issued a number of pedestrian safety tips
– Only cross the street at designated crosswalks, traffic lights or intersections.
– Don’t cross in the middle of a block or between parked cars.
– Increase a driver’s ability to see you when it’s dark out by carrying a flashlight or wearing reflective clothing.
– It’s safest to walk on a sidewalk. When there are no sidewalks available, walk on the shoulder of the road facing traffic.
– Pay attention to what’s happening on the road. Avoid distractions such as texting while walking.
– Make eye contact with drivers before you cross. Giving drivers a wave to say thank you when they have stopped for you is a good way to communicate that you see each other.
– To ensure your safety, check over your shoulder at intersections for traffic turning into your path of travel and check for drivers turning into and leaving driveways.

When crossing at a traffic light:
– Wait for traffic to come to a complete stop.
– Begin to cross at the start of the green light or “Walk” signal.
– Do not start to cross if you see a flashing “Do Not Walk” symbol or the light turns yellow. If you have already started to cross when these signals come on, complete your crossing in safety.
– Never cross on a red light.
