A call for passenger trains in Northern Ontario.

It comes from the Northern and Eastern Ontario Rail Network.

Local spokesperson Eric Boutillier says it’s part of a multi pronged strategy with bus service to go short distances and rail service to go longer distances

Currently, the Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Northern Development and Mines are developing a plan for Northern Ontario for the next quarter century.

He says the north is becoming more isolated partly because of transportation infrastructure we’re losing.

He says the north has lost the Northlander train, there’s no air flights to a city like Ottawa from Northern Ontario, nine motor coach route reductions or service eliminations have taken place within the past year and 674 highway closures in the Northeast took place between 2011 and 2014.

Boutillier says they are accepting public input July 15th at nomts.ca/contact-us
